Il brano fu scritta nel 1970 a Gloucester Road, Londra, per la futura moglie Angie Barnett. Nella prima versione incisa del brano, che doveva dar seguito al successo di Space Oddity, la chitarra era suonata da Marc Bolan. The Prettiest Star fu in seguito re-incisa a New York nel Dicembre del 1972 per essere inclusa su Aladdin Sane.
